Help gays to change
I appreciate the courage and viewpoint of the author of “Changing back” (February 4). She has presented a new perspective in understanding people who have a same-sex attraction.
I have been helping homosexuals for more than 20 years. Those who come to me for help include egosyntonic (those who accept their homosexual orientation) homosexuals and the egodystonic (those who cannot accept their homosexual orientation). Their stories of agony, confusion and struggles resulting from misunderstanding, rejection and discrimination from family, friends and society stirred my heart and created in me a desire to help.
Some homosexuals may want to change their sexual orientation, but others do not. It is my conviction that whoever seeks help for whatever reason should be given it. We should respect their freedom of choice.
However, an unfortunate phenomenon appears to have emerged. Some egodystonic homosexuals have told me that they have great difficulty finding counsellors in Hong Kong who have acquired the knowledge, skills and willingness to help them change their sexual orientation.
When they express their wish to change, counsellors often tell them that their homosexual orientation is inborn and cannot be changed; the only way they can resolve their inner conflict is to accept their sexual orientation. This is not true. There is ample evidence to the contrary, both from research and the experience of many homosexuals who have changed to heterosexuality.
As responsible helpers, we should put before those who seek help all the possible alternatives and let them make their own decisions, instead of imposing our preferences on them.
